Amazon encryption will leave users underwhelmed

A couple of weeks ago Cloud Pro reported how Amazon Web Services (AWS) had started to offer users an option to encrypt Elastic Block Store (EBS) data for the first time. If that was good news, then the latest AWS encryption announcement might be considered by some as orgasmic. AWS 'chief evangelist' Jeff Barr has revealed that users of the S3 file storage service can, at long last, protect their data at rest using their own encryption keys. So why am I left feeling disappointed and more than a little deflated by the news?
