Dial M for insecurity: where is your company endpoint?

Two announcements caught my eye this week: first, according to IDC, smartphones are now selling more units globally than PCs. In the last quarter of 2010 there were 92.1 million PCs shipped, that’s down 3% on the 2009 figures, while smartphones rocketed by some 87% to 100.9 million units shipped. The second being that Sophos has announced it is “closing the security gap by extending enterprise-grade security and data protection to consumer devices” such as the iPhone and Android handsets with a new mobile security platform. Something that Matthias Pankert, Head of Data Protection Product Management at Sophos, said when talking about that new platform really hit home with me: he said “the definition of a company endpoint is shifting rapidly” and oh boy is he right.
