Are massive data breaches a thing of the past?

I will put you out of your misery right away, the answer is no of course not numbnuts. However, according to the respected Data Breach Investigations Report, the 2011 version of which has been conducted by the Verizon RISK team with a little help from both the Dutch High Tech Crime Unit and the US Secret Service (apparently), the numbers of records breached are down. By how much? Well rather a damn lot actually: in the 2008 report there were 361 million stolen records, but the latest report which covers 2010 shows just 4 million.
