A browser ballot for security software?

What I'd like to see, as someone who has spent the best part of 20 years writing about computer security issues, is more emphasis being put upon freedom of choice for the user. I'm all for a browser ballot for security products, although I appreciate that would be pointless without some meaningful measure of worthiness attached so it would have to come with links to lab results and independent reviews of course. What I'd like to see stop is the notion that a computer that comes with a 3 month free trial of a particular security product installed, which most people will not uninstall but will cough up for a full license when the 'your security is about to expire' notices start creating an atmosphere of fear, is good enough.
